The South Park Business Group (SPBG) is a dynamic volunteer-driven organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the local businesses in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego. With a strong focus on building a vibrant and sustainable business community, the SPBA works to raise the profile of businesses, enhance economic opportunities, and create a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

The association plays a key role in organizing and executing popular community events such as our Walkabouts, which showcase the neighborhood's unique mix of shops, restaurants, and services, while also providing a platform for networking and collaboration among business owners. These events help foster a sense of community, attract new customers, and highlight South Park as a thriving local destination.

In addition to its event planning, the SPBG serves as an advocate for the business community by liaising with local government officials. The association works to address issues related to safety, infrastructure, and neighborhood improvements, ensuring that South Park remains a vibrant and attractive place for both business owners and their customers. Through its efforts, the South Park Business Association helps drive the continued growth and success of the neighborhood, making it a beloved part of San Diego.

SOUTH PARK HISTORY

South Park is located east of Balboa Park and was one of the first suburbs of Downtown San Diego. Serious development in the South Park neighborhood started around 1905 with the extension of streetcar service by the Bartlett Webster developing company

Streetcars in San Diego

In the 1910s, South Park became one of the many San Diego neighborhoods connected by the Class 1 streetcars and an extensive San Diego public transit system that was spurred by the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 and built by John D. Spreckels.

These streetcars became a fixture of this neighborhood until their retirement in 1939.
